LEADING THE WAY – IT – THE ALPHA OF APPLE
Embedding technology as a teaching and learning tool
SVPS stands in the modernist vanguard of educational developments with the growing expertise in digital education through global digital education platforms.
We live in exciting and fast changing times, and in an environment of increasing complexity, globalisation, and rapidly emerging technology. The need for ongoing developmental education has never been higher or more challenging and intrinsic to a higher quality of life. This means that providing an outstanding and progressive education is more relevant than ever.
The school understands the benefits of technology in enhancing learning. This plays a vital role in our curriculum. All learners from Grade R have access to the school’s computer facilities. There is a bank of iPads for use in the classrooms in combination with the One-on-One iPad policy from Grade 4-7. This technology does not drive the curriculum, but it enhances and enriches the learning and good classroom practice. We aspire to create pathways to develop confident, dependable, reliable, self-sufficient, responsible users of technology, digital collaborators, flexible in their use of operating systems, able to maintain a healthy balance between the digital and real-world.
Sun Valley Primary School offers online access to the CAMI Web Mathematics and Perceptual programme for all Grade R – 7 learners. This programme allows our learners to practise and strengthen specific concepts in the comfort of their homes, in their own time and at their own pace. It also allows teachers to make use of its wide variety of activities and assignments during class time where possible.
Parents and learners are able to access this web-based system on any device at home. Our school encourages all its learners to make use of this option as often as possible and enjoy watching their progress develop daily. We are an Apple Distinguished school.
Sun Valley Primary School offers online access to the Reading Eggs Programme for all Grade 1 – 6 learners. Learning to read is one of the most important skills children can learn. Reading Eggs makes the learning to read journey fun, interactive, and highly rewarding and it’s based on solid scientific research.
Reading Eggs was created to help children become fluent and proficient readers. The ‘learning to read’ journey is supported by carefully designed online reading games and activities that are easy to follow, self-paced, and highly engaging for young learners. Reading Eggs provides children with an educationally sound and highly enjoyable learn to read programme that is not only fun and effective, but also easy to integrate into daily routine.
Reading Eggs makes use of the following five essential keys to reading success:
- Phonemic awareness – the ability to hear and manipulate the different sounds in words.
- Phonics – recognising the connection between letters and the sound they make.
- Vocabulary – understanding the meaning of words, their definitions, and their context.
- Reading Comprehension – understanding the meaning of text – both in story books and information books.
- Fluency – the ability to read aloud with speed, understanding and accuracy.
Sun Valley is running a few robotics programmes, and we are very excited to announce that this year we are ready to launch Photon and Scottie Go robotics with the children!
Photon is a robotic program enriched with dedicated educational materials and applications. The Photon Robot for Education edition is intended for use in educational facilities as a didactic tool for teachers and educators.
Scottie Go is an innovative, hybrid, solution (board game and a free app), which introduces coding and programming in an interactive, tactile and fun way to kids from 6 years+, by combining physical puzzle tiles and the free App ensures that even the youngest of learners will enjoy the coding process.

Code4Kids teaches STEM principles. Code4Kids is specifically for children aged between 10 – 14 years, allowing these young makers to develop the necessary skills and knowledge to understand and experience the world 4IR (4th Industrial Revolution). Code4Kids uses a set of highly innovative workshops and hands-on lessons that combine theory and practice. The workshop input is tied into the school STEM curriculum.
Additionally all courses are tailored to the individual or groups age, interests and hobbies. When working with Code4Kids learners will be interacting with commonly-used coding languages such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript where they will be editing websites, learning basic coding concepts and doing data manipulation with Spreadsheets.
Sun Valley has been running the Sphero Robotics program. Sphero is more than just a robot, it is a programmable robot ball designed to inspire creativity through coding. Sphero transforms the way kids Gr 1 – 7 learn with a fun, comprehensive approach to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).
It’s the world’s first robotic ball that you control with a tilt, touch, or swing from your smartphone or iPad. You can drive Sphero, play tabletop and multiplayer games, hold Sphero in your hand to use it as a controller for on-screen gameplay, learn basic programming, and even explore augmented reality.
