COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND SERVICE PROJECTS
In an effort to give back to our community, Sun Valley Primary commits itself to a series of Community Outreach Projects that are carried out in Grade R – 7, as well as through the Sun Valley Primary staff.
Parents are very instrumental in assisting by providing the different donations or items. It is one of the highlights for each learner who manages to consider their role in the broader community. Whether it’s about a Beach clean up or the Ecobrick project, our parents rally to support our learners. Each year has presented challenges, but our SVPS families have not ceased to surprise us with the many donations.
GRADE R
Our Grade R learners get the opportunity to give back and put their new found environmental skills and ideas into practice by collecting warm blankets and tinned/dry dog food for TEARS. They have also expanded their outreach to include the TEARS Cattery.
GRADE 1
Our Grade 1 learners have partnered with the Volunteer Wildfire Services as their Community Outreach. They collect and donate items that are essential in keeping the Volunteer Firefighters hydrated and fuelled whilst fighting the wildfires in our area.
GRADE 2
Our Grade 2 learners pledge to donate toiletries, school supplies, toys, sweets and clothing towards the Santa Shoebox Project. These gift boxes are delivered to children in need so that they have a present to open at Christmas time.
GRADE 3
In Grade 3, the Outreach is focused on underprivileged children in our local community. The Grade 3 learners visit iThemba Pre-Primary and spend time playing and sharing a picnic on the field with the children from iThemba. As a grade, they gather books, stationery, toys and balls to donate to them on their visits.
GRADE 4
The Grade 4 learners have partnered with Simon’s Love Project to donate items for Project Flamingo. These two organistions work with local hospitals to deliver care packages to cancer patients. These care packages contain items that help make chemotherapy and it’s after effects more manageable.
GRADE 5
GRADE 6
The Grade 6 Community Outreach is to support Oscar’s Ark and the Woof Project. The learners collect food, blankets and toys for the shelter dogs. The learners spend the day learning the importance of caring for our four-legged friends and watch a mesmerising show from DogzCool.
GRADE 7
The Grade 7 learners and a group of Prefects team up with the Sweet Peas organisation, an outreach group that aims to provide emergency care packs for babies born at False Bay Hospital.
This exciting community development project follows on from the Baby Project during which Grade 7 learners are given the demanding task of having to care for a 2,5 kg Flour Baby, twenty-four-seven, for a 2 week period. During the course of this project Eve Halloway from the Sweet Peas organisation offers a presentation to our learners in which she shares the plight of less fortunate mothers and babies (many of these mothers are often teenagers). This talk proves to be a real eye-opener for our young learners. Learners experience a heightened understanding of the huge responsibility of parenthood and the consequences of unplanned and teen pregnancies.
SUN VALLEY STAFF
The Staff Community Service project collects blankets and food items. The staff then delivers the donations to Living Hope in Red Hill, for distribution to families in need in Ocean View, Masiphumelele, and Red Hill.
