LEARNER GUIDING PRINCIPLES

At the heart of living, is our desire to be connected. In a relationship-based school, children are bigger than any challenge or achievement. Every child in our school is unique. And although they learn to operate as a group, class or sporting house – their individuality remains a priority.

Relationships make us feel safe. Every structure in the school is designed to make learners feel part of the family. Children need to be in relationship with their educators and peers.

Sport and play is an important part of day-to-day life at our school. We offer a vast range of sporting activities.

Our learners participate in at least one Summer and one Winter Sport. Each and every day, our learners venture out to the fields to complete the 1km Walk-it Circuit. This is a specially designed circuit to enhance fitness, build muscle and co-ordination and cross the mid-line to assist learning. In the class, learners take part in a number of Movement activities. They perform Movement songs and Mind-moves which are specifically designed to cross the Horizontal and Vertical Midlines. This “wakes up” the brain and aids learning in various subjects such as Literacy or Mathematics.

In a brain-based school, the limbic brain manages our emotions. Data has to pass through the emotional brain to access the pre-frontal cortex. If the emotional brain doesn’t feel a sense of belonging, learning can’t take place.

A full-time Counsellor is available to assist learners to process trauma and events. We are great believers in the power of talking, collaborating and communication.

Once a learner feels safe and worthy, learning has to be meaningful and relevant. The 21st century and the Future Learning Age requires critical thinking, problem solving, staying cool under pressure, collaborating with others, and facilitating change; so gone are the days of teach, test and hope for the best.
Sun Valley Primary is world-renowned for its innovative approach to teaching and learning. We make use of modern technology and innovative curriculum design to deliver education that’s relevant for today, and tomorrow.

What’s your superpower? Our Code Curriculum is designed to prepare learners with the skills they need to be able to bring innovative tech-based solutions to life and thrive in a career in the tech industry that may seem far in the future, but the Future is Now. Learners explore the world of coding & robotics through our structured curriculum. Coding is plausibly one of the most vital skills for current as well as future generations to learn. The coding and robotics aims at preparing learners to problem-solve, think critically, work collaboratively and creatively, and function in a digital and information-driven global market.

“Alpha generation kids are facing a future we can only imagine. The jobs we were raised on are changing at breakneck speed. In fact, 85% of the jobs that will exist in 2030 haven’t even been invented yet” (Dell Technologies report 2019).

Through Music, Dance, Drama, Visual Art and our brand new Digital Art classes we aim to equip our learners with the essential skills they need to thrive in the 21st century. Specifically, they will develop skills such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity and innovation – all of which will help with many aspects of their future learning and development.

In our digital arts course we recognize that almost anything that can be done on paper can also be done on screen – and this is the home of our Gen Alpha kids. Our new course aims to lay a foundation for future graphic artists, fashion designers, animators, digital marketing strategists and much more”
