Sun Valley Primary School is passionate about music.

Staff make use of a variety of different music styles during lessons; where learners are encouraged to move to music, listen to music and sing along to different songs and tunes. Corporate singing is also enjoyed during Assemblies.

MUSIC ACADEMY

Our Music Academy started in 2001 by Brenda Feldtmann. Vandra Norris provides the leadership oversight and Janet Pienaar manages the academy. Janet is supported by 12 music tutors offering lessons in guitar, saxophone, violin, piano, singing, drums, and more. Learners enjoy unhindered access to professional tutoring in their chosen instruments. Learners are also offered opportunities to play at a variety of concerts, festivals and musical events to nurture and unleash their performance potential.

Our two full time class music teachers are Janet Pienaar and Karla van Niekerk. Together, they teach class music to all children from Grade R to Grade 7. They develop children’s love for music while working with rhythm, various instruments and digital platforms such as Garage Band. Their passion and excitement are clearly evident in every lesson.

CHOIR

Sun Valley Primary School boasts three choirs with a large number of members in each choir. There is a Grade 2 and 3 Choir, a Grade 4 and 5 Choir and a Grade 6 and 7 Choir. Any child who enjoys singing is encouraged to participate in the choir. Performing a mixture of pieces from contemporary hits to old classics, our choirs will have you singing along in no time. Our choirs offer performances at Assemblies, cultural functions, special events, school productions and community outreaches. We look forward to growing our choirs and offering greater opportunities to enjoy music together.

Our school has an Orchestra with over 20 members, playing different instruments. Mrs Pamela Barr is the conductor and she carefully writes the music for each instrument. We have students who play the guitar, flute, toot, xylophone, piano, saxophone, clarinet and drums. Our Orchestra offers performances in cultural functions, special events and community outreaches. We look forward to growing our Orchestra and hopefully develop the skills of each member by playing with other Orchestras.

GRADE 1 MUSIC MAKERS

We introduced our Grade 1 learners to a music makers session every week, where they enjoy playing with different musical instruments and practice rhythms and musical notation. They also have the opportunity to play on our bells, learning the notes which make up an octave and how to start reading music. What a delightful session this is, where memories are made.

Our Grade 7 learners have the opportunity to participate in a Percussion Band. Here learners work with the different percussion instruments and learn to play together to make music.
